If you love the irresistible combination of chocolate and peanut butter, this Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse is about to become one of your favorite homemade desserts. Rich, creamy, fluffy, and full of chocolate-peanut butter flavor, this easy mousse tastes like a peanut butter cup transformed into a smooth, luxurious dessert.

The best part? You only need a handful of simple ingredients and a few minutes of preparation to make it.

This mousse combines softened cream cheese, natural creamy peanut butter, unsweetened cocoa powder, heavy whipping cream, vanilla extract, and a powdered sugar-free sweetener. Together, these ingredients create a wonderfully rich chocolate mousse with a light, airy texture and a satisfying peanut butter flavor.

Unlike traditional chocolate mousse recipes that often rely on melted chocolate and added sugar, this keto-friendly version uses cocoa powder and a low-carb sweetener to deliver deep chocolate flavor without traditional granulated sugar.

The cream cheese provides richness and a subtle tanginess, while whipped heavy cream makes the mousse soft, fluffy, and almost cloud-like. Natural peanut butter adds a nutty, slightly salty flavor that balances the sweetness and cocoa.

You can enjoy this dessert immediately for a soft, airy consistency or refrigerate it for 20–30 minutes for a thicker, chilled mousse.

Whether you’re following a ketogenic lifestyle, reducing added sugar, or simply looking for a quick homemade chocolate dessert, this Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse is an easy recipe worth keeping.

What Is Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse?

Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse is a no-bake dessert made with high-fat dairy ingredients, peanut butter, cocoa powder, and a sugar-free sweetener.

Traditional chocolate mousse often contains melted chocolate, sugar, eggs, and whipped cream.

This simplified keto-inspired version replaces those ingredients with a combination of cream cheese, peanut butter, unsweetened cocoa powder, and whipped heavy cream.

The cream cheese and peanut butter create a smooth, flavorful base.

Cocoa powder provides the chocolate flavor without requiring sweetened chocolate.

Powdered monk fruit sweetener with erythritol adds sweetness while avoiding traditional sugar.

The whipped cream is folded into the chocolate-peanut butter mixture, introducing air and transforming the thick base into a light mousse.

The result is a creamy dessert with a rich chocolate flavor, noticeable peanut butter notes, and a soft, fluffy consistency.

Although it’s designed to be lower in carbohydrates than conventional sugar-sweetened mousse, the exact carbohydrate content depends on the peanut butter, sweetener, chocolate chips, and portion size used.

Ingredients for Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse

This recipe uses seven main ingredients, plus optional chocolate chips.

For the Mousse

  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream, cold

  • 2 oz cream cheese, softened

  • 2 tablespoons natural creamy peanut butter

  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1–2 tablespoons powdered monk fruit sweetener with erythritol, or to taste

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Pinch of salt

Optional Topping

– 1 tablespoon sugar-free chocolate chips

Ingredient Notes

Heavy whipping cream: Heavy whipping cream is essential for creating the mousse’s light and airy texture. When whipped, it traps air and forms soft peaks. Use cold cream because it whips more easily and maintains its structure better.

Cream cheese: Cream cheese gives the mousse a rich, smooth base and adds a subtle tanginess that balances the peanut butter and chocolate. Allow it to soften before mixing to prevent lumps.

Natural creamy peanut butter: Peanut butter provides the signature nutty flavor. Choose a natural peanut butter without added sugar for a keto-friendly version. Stir it thoroughly before measuring if the natural oils have separated.

Unsweetened cocoa powder: Cocoa powder adds rich chocolate flavor without the sugar found in many chocolate products. Natural unsweetened cocoa powder works well, but Dutch-processed cocoa can also be used for a smoother, darker chocolate flavor.

Powdered monk fruit sweetener with erythritol: Powdered sweetener dissolves more easily than granulated sweetener and helps prevent a gritty texture. Different brands have different sweetness levels, so adjust according to the product and your taste.

Vanilla extract: Vanilla enhances both the chocolate and peanut butter flavors. It adds warmth and helps round out the cocoa’s bitterness.

Salt: A small pinch of salt makes the chocolate flavor more pronounced and balances the sweetness.

Sugar-free chocolate chips: Optional sugar-free chocolate chips add a little crunch and extra chocolate flavor. Check the label because the carbohydrate content and sweetener ingredients vary by brand.

How to Make Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse

This no-bake dessert comes together in a few simple steps. The most important techniques are softening the cream cheese, whipping the cream properly, and folding the mixtures together gently.

Step 1: Soften the Cream Cheese

Remove the cream cheese from the refrigerator and allow it to soften at room temperature briefly.

Softened cream cheese blends more easily with the peanut butter and cocoa powder.

If the cream cheese is too cold, it may leave small lumps in the finished mousse.

The cream cheese should feel soft enough to mix smoothly but shouldn’t be warm or melted.

Step 2: Combine the Chocolate Peanut Butter Ingredients

Place the softened cream cheese in a medium mixing bowl.

Add the natural creamy peanut butter, unsweetened cocoa powder, powdered monk fruit sweetener, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.

Begin with 1 tablespoon of sweetener if you prefer a less sweet dessert.

You can add more after tasting the mixture.

Step 3: Beat Until Smooth and Creamy

Using an electric hand mixer, beat the ingredients together until smooth.

Continue mixing until the cream cheese, peanut butter, cocoa powder, and sweetener are completely incorporated.

The mixture will be fairly thick at this stage.

Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula to ensure everything is evenly combined.

Taste a small amount and adjust the sweetness if necessary.

The chocolate-peanut butter base should be rich, smooth, and slightly thick.

Step 4: Whip the Heavy Cream

Pour the cold heavy whipping cream into a separate clean mixing bowl.

Using an electric mixer, beat the cream until soft peaks form.

Soft peaks mean that when you lift the beaters, the whipped cream forms a peak that gently bends over.

Avoid whipping until the cream becomes stiff or grainy.

Softly whipped cream is easier to fold into the chocolate mixture and produces a lighter mousse.

Step 5: Lighten the Chocolate Peanut Butter Mixture

Add approximately one-third of the whipped cream to the chocolate peanut butter mixture.

Using a spatula, gently stir or fold until the thick base becomes slightly lighter and softer.

This first addition helps loosen the mixture, making it easier to incorporate the remaining whipped cream without deflating it.

Step 6: Fold in the Remaining Whipped Cream

Add the remaining whipped cream.

Using a rubber spatula, gently fold the mixture together.

Move the spatula down through the center, along the bottom of the bowl, and up over the top.

Rotate the bowl as you continue folding.

Avoid vigorous stirring because it can remove the air from the whipped cream.

Continue until the mousse is evenly colored and no large white streaks remain.

The finished mixture should look light, creamy, and fluffy.

Step 7: Transfer to a Dessert Bowl

Spoon the mousse into a small dessert bowl, glass, or ramekin.

Use the back of a spoon to create soft swirls on the surface.

For a more decorative presentation, transfer the mousse to a piping bag fitted with a star tip and pipe it into a serving glass.

The mousse should hold soft peaks while remaining creamy.

Step 8: Add Optional Chocolate Chips

Sprinkle the sugar-free chocolate chips over the top.

The chips add a pleasant crunch that contrasts with the soft mousse.

You can also add a light dusting of cocoa powder or a tiny drizzle of warmed, unsweetened peanut butter if desired.

Step 9: Serve Immediately or Chill

Enjoy the mousse immediately if you prefer a softer, fluffier texture.

For a thicker, more chilled dessert, refrigerate for approximately 20–30 minutes.

Chilling helps the cream cheese and peanut butter mixture firm up slightly.

Serve cold with a spoon.

Time and Yield

  • Prep Time: Approximately 10 minutes

  • Cook Time: 0 minutes

  • Optional Chill Time: 20–30 minutes

  • Total Time: Approximately 10 minutes without chilling or 30–40 minutes with chilling

  • Yield: Approximately 1–2 small dessert portions

  • Servings: 2 smaller servings or 1 generous serving

The exact yield depends on how much the heavy cream expands during whipping.

Nutritional values will vary depending on the cream cheese, peanut butter, sweetener, and optional chocolate chips used. The recipe is intended to be keto-friendly, but exact net carbohydrates and calories should be calculated using your specific ingredients and portion sizes.

Tips for the Best Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse

Use softened cream cheese. Cold cream cheese can leave lumps in the mousse. Let it soften enough to blend smoothly.

Keep the heavy cream cold. Cold cream whips more efficiently and holds its shape better.

Choose powdered sweetener. Powdered monk fruit sweetener with erythritol creates a smoother texture than coarse granulated sweetener.

Use unsweetened peanut butter. Check the ingredient label to avoid peanut butter with added sugar.

Don’t overwhip the cream. Stop when soft peaks form. Overwhipped cream can make the mousse grainy.

Fold gently. Gentle folding preserves the air in the whipped cream and keeps the mousse fluffy.

Taste before chilling. Adjust the sweetener before adding the whipped cream or before transferring the mousse to the serving bowl.

Use good-quality cocoa powder. Since chocolate is a main flavor, the quality of the cocoa powder makes a noticeable difference.

Add a pinch of salt. Salt enhances the chocolate and peanut butter flavors.

Chill for a firmer texture. Refrigerating the mousse for 20–30 minutes gives it a thicker consistency.

Serve in small bowls. This mousse is rich, so smaller portions can be satisfying.

Add toppings just before serving. Chocolate chips and other crunchy toppings taste best when added close to serving time.

Variations and Customizations

This keto mousse is easy to customize with different flavors, textures, and toppings.

Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheesecake Mousse

Increase the cream cheese slightly for a more cheesecake-like texture.

The result will be thicker and tangier.

Chill for at least 30 minutes before serving.

You may need a little extra sweetener to balance the bitterness.

Add sugar-free chocolate shavings on top.

Keto Peanut Butter Cup Mousse

Layer the chocolate peanut butter mousse with a small amount of plain peanut butter mousse.

Top with chopped sugar-free peanut butter cup pieces, if available and compatible with your dietary preferences.

This creates a dessert inspired by classic chocolate peanut butter candy.

Keto Chocolate Almond Butter Mousse

Replace the peanut butter with unsweetened creamy almond butter.

The flavor will be slightly milder and nuttier.

This is a good variation if you prefer almond butter.

Keto Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse

Replace the peanut butter with an unsweetened hazelnut butter.

The result has a chocolate-hazelnut flavor.

Adjust the sweetener to taste.

Keto Mocha Peanut Butter Mousse

Add 1/4 teaspoon instant espresso powder to the chocolate peanut butter base.

What to Serve With Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse

Fresh raspberries: A few raspberries add tartness and color that balance the rich chocolate.

Fresh strawberries: Sliced strawberries provide a refreshing contrast to the creamy peanut butter mousse.

Sugar-free chocolate chips: Chocolate chips add crunch and intensify the chocolate flavor.

Whipped cream: A small spoonful of unsweetened whipped cream makes the dessert even lighter.

Chopped peanuts: A sprinkle of chopped roasted peanuts adds a salty crunch.

Unsweetened coconut flakes: Coconut flakes provide texture and a mild sweetness.

Cocoa powder: A light dusting of cocoa powder creates a simple, elegant finish.

Coffee: The rich mousse pairs beautifully with black coffee or espresso.

Unsweetened almond milk: A glass of chilled unsweetened almond milk provides a refreshing accompaniment.

When following a strict ketogenic diet, remember to account for any toppings in your total carbohydrate intake.

Troubleshooting Common Problems

My Mousse Is Too Thick

The cream cheese and peanut butter base may be too thick if the cream cheese was cold or the whipped cream was overbeaten.

Allow the cream cheese to soften properly before mixing.

Fold in the whipped cream gradually.

If the finished mousse is too dense, gently fold in a small amount of additional softly whipped cream.

My Mousse Is Too Runny

Runny mousse can result from underwhipped cream or excessive mixing after combining the ingredients.

Make sure the heavy cream reaches soft peaks before folding it into the chocolate mixture.

Refrigerate the mousse for 20–30 minutes to help it firm up.

My Mousse Is Grainy

A grainy texture may result from granulated sweetener, cold cream cheese, or overwhipped cream.

Use powdered sweetener and fully softened cream cheese.

Whip the heavy cream only until soft peaks form.

My Mousse Has Cream Cheese Lumps

Cream cheese lumps usually happen when the cream cheese is too cold.

Beat the cream cheese thoroughly with the peanut butter before adding the whipped cream.

For the smoothest result, scrape down the bowl several times during mixing.

My Mousse Isn’t Fluffy

If the mousse is dense, the whipped cream may have lost its air during mixing.

Fold gently instead of stirring vigorously.

Avoid using an electric mixer after the whipped cream has been added.

My Mousse Tastes Too Bitter

Unsweetened cocoa powder has a naturally bitter flavor.

Add a little more powdered sweetener to balance it.

You can also add a few extra drops of vanilla extract.

My Mousse Is Too Sweet

Different sugar-free sweeteners vary in sweetness.

Start with the smaller recommended amount and increase gradually.

If the finished mousse is too sweet, you can balance it with a little additional unsweetened cocoa powder or plain whipped cream.

My Mousse Tastes Too Salty

Some peanut butter brands contain more salt than others.

If your peanut butter is already salted, you may not need the additional pinch of salt.

Choose unsalted natural peanut butter for more control.

My Mousse Becomes Firm After Refrigeration

The cream cheese and peanut butter naturally firm up when chilled.

This is normal.

Let the mousse sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving if you prefer a softer consistency.

Storage and Make-Ahead Instructions

Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse is a convenient dessert to prepare ahead of time.

Refrigerator Storage

Transfer the mousse to an airtight container or cover individual serving bowls.

Refrigerate promptly at 40°F or below.

For best quality, enjoy within 3–4 days.

The mousse may become firmer as it chills.

If necessary, let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving.

Can You Freeze Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse?

Yes, although freezing may change the texture.

Place the mousse in a freezer-safe airtight container.

Freeze for up to 1 month for best quality.

Thaw in the refrigerator before serving.

The mousse may become slightly denser or less airy after thawing.

You can also enjoy it partially frozen for a firmer, ice cream-like dessert.

Make-Ahead Instructions

Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Add sugar-free chocolate chips or other crunchy toppings shortly before serving.

This is a convenient option for preparing desserts in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse Actually Keto-Friendly?

It can fit into a ketogenic diet when made with unsweetened peanut butter, unsweetened cocoa powder, heavy cream, cream cheese, and a suitable sugar-free sweetener.

However, peanut butter and dairy still contain carbohydrates.

The exact net carbohydrate content depends on the brands and serving sizes used.

Can I Make This Mousse Without Cream Cheese?

Yes, but the texture will change.

Cream cheese gives the mousse richness, structure, and a subtle tanginess.

Without it, the mousse will be lighter and less cheesecake-like.

You may need to adjust the amount of whipped cream or peanut butter.

Can I Use Almond Butter Instead of Peanut Butter?

Yes.

Unsweetened creamy almond butter is a good substitute.

It creates a slightly different nutty flavor while maintaining a creamy consistency.

Can I Use Crunchy Peanut Butter?

Yes.

Crunchy peanut butter adds small peanut pieces throughout the mousse.

The result won’t be as smooth, but it will have additional texture.

Can I Use Regular Sugar Instead of Monk Fruit Sweetener?

Yes, but the dessert would no longer be sugar-free or keto-friendly in the same way.

Powdered sugar would blend more smoothly than granulated sugar.

Can I Use Stevia Instead?

Yes.

Use a powdered stevia-based sweetener suitable for desserts.

Because stevia products vary in concentration, follow the manufacturer’s conversion guidance and adjust to taste.

Can I Use Dutch-Processed Cocoa Powder?

Absolutely.

Dutch-processed cocoa powder has a smoother, less acidic chocolate flavor.

It works well in this no-bake mousse.

Can I Use Chocolate Protein Powder?

You can experiment with chocolate protein powder, but it will change the texture and nutritional profile.

Protein powders absorb moisture differently and may make the mousse thicker or chalkier.

If adding protein powder, start with a small amount and adjust the liquid or cream as needed.

Is This a High-Protein Dessert?

Not necessarily.

Although peanut butter and cream cheese contain some protein, this recipe is primarily made with high-fat ingredients such as heavy cream, cream cheese, and peanut butter.

It is designed as a keto-friendly, lower-sugar dessert rather than a specifically high-protein recipe.

Can I Make This Mousse Dairy-Free?

You can experiment with dairy-free cream cheese and a plant-based whipping cream alternative.

However, these substitutions may affect the texture and flavor.

Choose products that can be whipped and hold soft peaks.

Can I Make This Without an Electric Mixer?

Yes.

You can beat the cream cheese mixture with a sturdy whisk and whip the heavy cream by hand.

However, whipping cream manually requires more effort.

An electric hand mixer makes the process faster and easier.

Why Do I Need to Whip the Cream Separately?

Whipping the cream separately incorporates air.

Folding it into the chocolate peanut butter mixture creates the light, fluffy texture associated with mousse.

If everything is mixed together without whipping the cream, the dessert will be denser.

Can I Eat the Mousse Immediately?

Yes.

The mousse is ready to eat as soon as the ingredients are combined.

It will have a soft, fluffy texture.

Chilling is optional.

Why Does the Mousse Get Thicker in the Refrigerator?

Cream cheese, peanut butter, and dairy fats become firmer when chilled.

This gives the mousse a thicker, more structured consistency.

Can I Make This Recipe for Two People?

Yes.

Divide the mousse into two small dessert bowls or glasses.

Because the recipe is rich, two smaller servings may be preferable.

Can I Double the Recipe?

Absolutely.

Double all the ingredients and follow the same method.

Use a larger mixing bowl and fold the whipped cream gently into the chocolate peanut butter base.

Can I Add Sugar-Free Chocolate Chips?

Yes.

Sugar-free chocolate chips add extra chocolate flavor and a little crunch.

You can sprinkle them over the top or fold a small amount into the finished mousse.

Can I Add Chopped Peanuts?

Yes.

Chopped roasted peanuts add a satisfying crunch.

For a sweet-and-salty contrast, use lightly salted peanuts.

Can I Make This Mousse Ahead for a Party?

Yes.

Prepare the mousse in individual serving glasses and refrigerate.

Add toppings shortly before serving.

This makes it a convenient dessert for gatherings.

Can I Use Powdered Peanut Butter Instead?

You can experiment with powdered peanut butter, but it contains much less fat and will produce a different texture.

You may need to add liquid or adjust the other ingredients to achieve a creamy consistency.

How Long Does Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse Last?

When stored properly in an airtight container in the refrigerator, it’s best enjoyed within 3–4 days.

Can I Freeze Individual Portions?

Yes.

Divide the mousse into freezer-safe containers and freeze for up to 1 month for best quality.

Thaw in the refrigerator or enjoy partially frozen.

Is This Mousse Gluten-Free?

The main ingredients are generally naturally gluten-free.

However, check the labels on peanut butter, cocoa powder, sweetener, vanilla extract, and chocolate chips if gluten avoidance is important.

What Makes This Mousse Different From Chocolate Pudding?

Chocolate pudding is usually cooked or thickened with starch.

This mousse is made without cooking and gets its airy texture from whipped heavy cream.

It has a richer, fluffier consistency than traditional pudding.

Final Thoughts

Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse is proof that a simple homemade dessert can deliver rich, satisfying flavor without requiring complicated ingredients or baking techniques.

The combination of creamy peanut butter, unsweetened cocoa powder, softened cream cheese, and whipped heavy cream creates a smooth, fluffy dessert with a delicious balance of chocolate and peanut butter.

Vanilla extract adds warmth, a pinch of salt enhances the flavor, and powdered sugar-free sweetener provides sweetness without traditional added sugar.
