Description

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon fine salt
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons heavy cream or whole milk
  • Optional: 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon orange extract
  • Optional: orange gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter using an electric mixer for about 2 to 3 minutes until smooth and lighter in color.
  2. Incorporate the fresh orange zest and mix for an additional 30 seconds.
  3. Gradually add 2 cups of the powdered sugar, mixing on low speed until combined, then beating on medium speed for 30 seconds.
  4. Add the remaining powdered sugar, salt, vanilla, and 2 tablespoons of cream. Mix on low speed until combined, then beat on medium-high for 2 minutes.
  5. Pour in the fresh orange juice and whip for 1 minute, scraping down the sides of the bowl.
  6. Adjust the texture by adding additional cream, 1 tablespoon at a time, until reach desired consistency.
  7. Beat for another 2 minutes. If desired, add orange extract and food coloring, combining thoroughly.
  8. Use or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days.

Notes

For a dairy-free option, use margarine and almond milk. Allow butter to soften to ensure fluffiness.
