- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- 2 tablespoons orange juice
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon fine salt
- 2 to 4 tablespoons heavy cream or whole milk
- Optional: 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon orange extract
- Optional: orange gel food coloring
Instructions
- In a large bowl, beat the softened butter using an electric mixer for about 2 to 3 minutes until smooth and lighter in color.
- Incorporate the fresh orange zest and mix for an additional 30 seconds.
- Gradually add 2 cups of the powdered sugar, mixing on low speed until combined, then beating on medium speed for 30 seconds.
- Add the remaining powdered sugar, salt, vanilla, and 2 tablespoons of cream. Mix on low speed until combined, then beat on medium-high for 2 minutes.
- Pour in the fresh orange juice and whip for 1 minute, scraping down the sides of the bowl.
- Adjust the texture by adding additional cream, 1 tablespoon at a time, until reach desired consistency.
- Beat for another 2 minutes. If desired, add orange extract and food coloring, combining thoroughly.
- Use or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days.
Notes
For a dairy-free option, use margarine and almond milk. Allow butter to soften to ensure fluffiness.
