- 4 slices of bread
- 4 slices of ham
- 4 slices of cheese (Gruyère or Emmental)
- 2 eggs
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 1 tablespoon of flour
- 1 cup of milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat, add flour, and stir to create a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, cooking until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
- Assemble the toast by placing ham and cheese between two slices of bread.
- Spread the roux over the top of the sandwiches and place them on a baking sheet.
- Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- In a skillet, fry the eggs in the remaining butter until the whites are set but the yolks are still runny.
- Top each sandwich with a fried egg before serving.
Notes
- For a vegetarian option, omit the ham and add sautéed mushrooms.
- Serve with a side of mixed greens for a complete meal.
