- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk, warmed
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 2 cups apples, peeled and diced
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, mix warm milk, melted butter, and eggs.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth, then let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- In the meantime, prepare the apple filling by mixing diced apples, brown sugar, lemon juice, and spices in a bowl.
- Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a rectangle and spread the apple filling evenly over it.
- Roll the dough tightly into a log and cut it in half lengthwise.
- Twist the two halves together and place in a greased loaf pan.
- Let the babka rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
- Allow to cool before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can add a splash of vanilla extract to the dough.
- Feel free to substitute the apples with pears or other fruits.
- This babka can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
